New research has revealed the cheapest places in Greece for Americans to relocate to, with the city of Serres ranking number one.
Real estate agency Elxis At Home in Greece crunched the numbers on the cost of living in the US, as well as 78 different areas in Greece, to reveal which ones Americans could save the most money by moving to.
They considered over 30 factors to calculate approximate cost of living, including average rent for a one-bedroom apartment, average mobile phone plan cost, and average taxi starting price.

Serres is the most affordable city in Greece, with a monthly living cost of $1,268, which is only 43.74% of the US average. One of the biggest cost differences is rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center of Serres costs just $260.10 per month, compared to an average of $1,572.12 in the US.
Katerini ranks second, with a monthly living cost of $1,323, about 45.63% of the US average. Dining out in Katerini is much cheaper, with a meal at an inexpensive restaurant costing an average of $15.60, compared to around $18.94 in the US.
Salamina places third with an average living cost of $1,325 per month, equal to 45.69% of that in the US. One of the biggest price differences is in fresh produce, with a kilogram of apples costing $1.98 in Salamina, compared to $5.09 in the US. Similarly, a kilogram of onions costs just $1.13 in this Greek city, compared to $3.01 in the US.
Ioannina is next, with an average living cost of $1,333 per month, 45.98% of the US average. Rent is much cheaper here, with a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costing around $374.55 per month, compared to $1,572.12 in the US. A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant here costs $31.21 on average, which is less than half of the US average of $72.11.
Komotini takes the fifth spot, with an average monthly living cost of $1,335, which is equal to just 46.04% of US living costs. Groceries here are much cheaper, with a kilogram of white rice costing just $2.28, compared to an average of $4.40 in the US. A kilogram of chicken fillets costs around $7.29 in Komotini, which is significantly cheaper than the US average of $11.36.
Kavala follows, with a monthly living cost of $1,359, or 46.88% of the US average. The price of a mobile phone plan is much less in Kavala, costing just $19.09 per month on average, compared to around $55.69 in the US. Similarly, internet costs are much cheaper at $28.70 per month, versus an average of $65.89 in the US.
Corinth comes in seventh, with a monthly living cost of $1,378, about 47.52% of US living costs. The average price of a bottle of wine here is $5.20, compared to $13.87 in the US. A monthly transport pass is also considerably cheaper, at $20.81, compared to $63.18 in the US.
Nafpaktos is eighth, with an average living cost of $1,380 per month, or 47.59% of the US average. Clothing is a lot cheaper here, with an average pair of Nike running shoes costing $61.13, compared to $84.27 in the US. Similarly, an average summer dress from a chain store costs $28.93 in Nafpaktos, and $42.88 in the US.
Patras ranks ninth, with an average monthly living cost of $1,400, making it 48.29% of the US average. Dining out is much cheaper here, with a meal for two at a mid-range restaurant costing $50.46 on average, compared to $72.11 in the US. An average combo meal at McDonald’s is priced at $7.80 in Patras, whereas it costs around $10.79 in the US.
Alexandroupolis rounds out the top ten, with a monthly living cost of $1,446, which is equal to 49.87% of the US average. Transport is much cheaper here, with a one-way ticket on local transport averaging $1.25, compared to $2.57 in the US. The average price of a taxi per kilometer in Alexandroupolis is $1.09, compared to $1.73 in the US.
